My log dates are mostly exact, but occasionally I forgot to log something
until a turn or three after the fact. I had to estimate those.
Also my PC hung twice (very unusual while playing Civ) and I had to
start from the last save. I tried to play exactly as before, and it
was only a couple turns each time, so I think I got it right.
Finally, at least once when I returned to the game a day or two later,
I made a mistake and didn't load the latest save. Somehow I went
one or two back. I'm not sure I played exactly the same (I didn't
realize I was re-playing right away) but it should have been close.
I've never kept a log before. It was a distraction and slowed me down
a lot, and it got pretty tedious after a while.

4000 Settlers explore both directions along river
Hut - chariot
Hut - archer
3800 - Found capital (London) on good site
         (3 specials visible, on river).
Settler, chariot, and archer still exploring.
       Research Alphabet.
3700 - Archer & chariot uncover whale and wheat.
Move settler towards "sweet spot" -- possible
SCC location (whale, wheat > silk, two river
squares, grassland w/ shield, plains, & possible
       3rd special when mined.
3600 - London warrior built, start settler.
       Found York - start warrior.
       Alphabet discovered, Research Ceremonial Burial.
3550 - Archer meets Celtic warrior. Make peace, demand
tribute -- get Ceremonial Burial! (expected money).
What to research? -- best choices are Bronze Working (Collosus),
Pottery (HG), Writing (diplo). Usually at this point I choose
Bronze, but with only two cities it's too early for Col & no
       need for HG, so Writing.
3450 - Warrior finds hut, 50g. Send archer to look for Celts.
3350 - York builds warrior, starts settler.
Archer finds Cardiff -- too close; have to block Celtic
       expansion my way quickly.
Not enough money to rush-buy settler, and can't incremental-buy
because only units are warrior and settler. Maybe should have
researched Bronze to get phalanx option.
3250 - Have to withdraw archer to nearest city (London) so leave him
there and send warrior exploring. Charior and York warrior
       also still exploring.
Rush-buy settler (going to build city blocking Celts). Population
of one so can't start another settler yet; start warrior.
3150 - Discover writing, research Code of Laws.
3100 - Settler founds Nottingham. Wasn't sure whether to build on
jungle/river square or just south on grassland. Go for
jungle/river for defense bonus and access to 2 extra river squares.
Chariot discovers hut - tip or not? Take a chance, hoping for money
to rush-buy settler. Get archer. Hmm - two archers and chariot
may be enough to conquer Cardiff.
Change London from building warrior to diplomat (otherwise too much
support). Change Nottingham from diplo to warrior.
2950 - Continue moving archers and charior towards Cardiff.
Change London from diplo to settler. Need more cities fast.
2850 - York incremental rush-buy settler.
       Nottingham builds warrior, start settler.
2800 - Code of Laws, start Monarchy.
Move York settler towards Cardiff to block Celts, in case I can't
         conquer Cardiff.
2650 - London incremental rush-buy settler. Start diplo.
2550 - York warrior, start temple (to control happiness while wonder building).
2450 - Capture Cardiff! Choice of Mysticism or Map-making; choose Map.
       Discover Kells (Pop 1).
York settler founds Hastings - starts with unhappy citizen, change to Elvis.
2400 - Chariot destroys Kells, end of Celtic civilization.
2250 - London settler builds two roads near York to increase trade.
Discover Monarchy. Missed Odeo year by one turn. Choose to revolt to
         Monarchy anyway.
Hastings rush-buy warrior, change Elvis to worker. Start settler.
2100 - Archer discovers sweet city spot - fish & two whales. Would have been good
       SCC if found earlier.
2050 - Monarchy established, 20/70/10 Taxes/Science/Luxury.
London settler finishes second York road. Will go on to found new city.
       Nottingham rush-buys settler.
1950 - Cardiff rush-buys settler. Starts trireme.
1850 - York builds temple, starts library.
1800 - Chariot encounters Aztec. Make peace, demand tribute - 100g.
Want to block choke point between us.
1750 - London diplomat.
       Cardiff settler founds Coventry.
1700 - Pottery discovered. Research Bronze Working.
1650 - Canturybury warrior. Rush-bought warrior in London for disorder control.
Founded Warwick. Unhappy citizen changed to Elvis.
1600 - Various partial rush-buying (2 warriors, trireme).
1500 - Bronze Working. Research Currency to get to Trade.
1450 - Rush finished trireme. Partial rush-bought phalanx & settler.
Archer explored east of Warwick. Now I wish I'd checked before settling
Warwick -- would have taken fish & pheasant spot first.
[NOTE: I know some build only warriors for defense/martial control, but I
feel better with a phalanx in each city.]
1400 - Rushed phalanx, partial rushed settlers.
1300 - Various partial rush-buying. [NOTE: I'm going to stop logging this, as I
do it a lot and with more cities it will be too cumbersome.]
1350 - London finished phalanx, started diplo. Want to build caravans but can't.
1250 - Currency. Researching Trade.
       Rushed settler in Canterbury.
1200 - Rushed phalanx in Warwick. Changed London archer to be supported from
         Warwick.
       Canterbury build settler.
[NOTE: I'm amazed at the lack of barbarians so far. I don't recall any,
either from huts or appearing. This is very unusual. I'm pretty sure
       I selected Raging Hordes. It's also unusual that I haven't started a
wonder by now. My city founding and research to trade is going slower
than normal for me. Not sure why.]
1150 - Bribed Aztec warrior.
1100 - Founded Newcastle.
1000 - 100g tribute from Aztecs.
Looks like I'll discover trade next turn, so started diplos in York and
London which I'll convert to caravans before finishing.
 975 - Trade.
Exchanged trade for Literacy with Aztecs.
       Founded Oxford.
 950 - Researching Horseback Riding.
 925 - Hut - advanced tribe!
900 - Met Japanese. Tried to exchange knowledge but not what I want. Tribute 150g.
Civil disorder problems - Oxford and Liverpool (previously in Cardiff too).
May go for Hanging Gardens rather than Colossus, when I get enough caravans.
       Met Vikings. 150g tribute.
875 - Rushed warriors in Oxford & Liverpool.
Bribed Viking warrior (21g) hoping for NON unit, but he was assigned to Oxford.
825 - Discovered Horseback Riding. Researching Mysticism (for temple happiness).
750 - Nottingham Dye caravan established trade route with York.
York Hides caravan on way to Aztec city.
700 - Aztecs no longer demand Hides. Guess I'll send it there anyway.
       25g tribute from Vikings.
       50g from Aztecs.
[Note: if it's not obvious from the save games, I've been partial rush-buying
every caravan -- I buy the current row. I'll continue as long as I have
       enough gold.]
 675 - 25g from Japanese.
600 - York Hides caravan arrives in Teotihuacan, 18g.
550 - London Gold caravan arrives in York, 24g.
       Finished (bought) Hanging Gardens.
Barbarians conquered Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. I hope they can keep it.
Conventry Gems caravan arrives in York, 36g.
525 - Aztecs requested alliance to fight Japanese; I declined.
Discovered Philosophy! Took Polytheism, researching the Wheel.
500 - York builds Colossus (with waiting caravans). Starts marketplace.
Not doing any rush-buying to save money for barbarian bribes.
 475 - Hut - 50g.
450 - Warwick Silk caravan arrives in London, 30g.
 425 - Met Americans, 150g tribute.
Decided I need more settlers, switched from a couple caravans.
400 - Discover Wheel, research Monotheism.
 375 - Polar hut - wandering Nomads!
325 - Barbarians land near Newcastle.
300 - Hastings cloth caravan arrives in Warwick, 20g.
250 - Discovered Monotheism, researching Masonry.
York built granary. (I want to grow it faster, before WLT*D). Started marketplace.
150g tribute from Japanese, 50g from Vikings.
225 - Dover founded (by nomad).
 200 - 25g from Americans.
175 - Barbs captured Aztec city of Teotihuacan. Aztecs are usually stronger than this.
 125 - Dye caravan arrived Canterbury, 24g.
100 - Discovered Masonry, researching Construction.
  75 - Hastings-Cardiff dye trade route.
  50 - London-Edo copper trade route, 48g.
  25 - Oxford-Cardiff Spice route.
A.D.
   1 - Nottingham-London hides trade route, 12g.
       Polar hut - wandering nomad!
[Note: I'm starting to bribe barb archers to get NON units. I'll continue this as
       long as they last.]
Also, I've decided not to build Marco Polo's. There are enough civs nearby
to keep me conquering when I get started, and I don't think there's much
tech to swap. Could be a mistake but I'm going for longer lasting wonders.]
20 - Discovered Construction, researching Mathematics.
Bribed Aztec settler for 176g. I need more settlers faster, and NONs are nice.
  60 - Americans build Pyramids.
  80 - Polar hut - Engineering.
120 - Mined pheasant as 3rd York special. Good that there was a special, but nicer
       if it had arrows.
       126g tribute from Japanese.
Swapped Americans Trade for Warrior Code, got 100g tribute.
Polar hut - Legion (unfortunately not a NON).
 200 - Hut - 25g.
Mike's Chapel. [I miscalculated and didn't prepare enough caravans for
this; ended up building/buying more than I should have.]
220 - Discovered Mathematics, research Astronomy.
Another stupid mistake - built caravan in York (SCC) but had nothing to supply.
Had to make it food & will stockpile for wonder. Wanted it foreign trade route.
 320 - Canterbury-Osaka copper trade route.
 340 - Liverpool-Newcastle spice trade route, 48g.
 360 - Polar hut - barb horsemen.
Oxford-Osaka copper trade route -- mistake, Canterbury already delivered here. 12g.
400 - Non-vet warrior attacked and defeated barb archer near Coventry!
[Note: If anyone happened to notice a fortified diplo, that was a mistake - wrong unit.]
480 - Sneak attack by Japanese forces - warrior killed my NON chariot. Japanese are
asking to be first assault victims.
Barb archer kills caravan headed to Aztec city.
520 - Aztecs, 25g tribute. Swap Construction for Iron Working with Americans. (I think
it was Construction, may have been something else.) 75g tribute from Americans.
Americans offered an alliance and I was going to take it, but they wanted me to
declare war on Vikings. I'd rather go after the Japanese. Maybe I should
have accepted -- then the Americans might help with the Japanese. I think I'll
         try again soon.
560 - Discovered Invention, research Bridge Building.
580 - Approached Americans, made alliance, declared war on Vikings, bribed Aarhus.
 600 - Nottingham-York silk trade route, 24g.
Pay Americans 50g to declare war on Japanese. (Why should I have to pay? We're
allied, and they made me declare war on Vikings for no bounty.)
640 - York builds Copernicus' Observatory.
 640 - Dover-Hastings dye trade route, 16g.
 660 - Cardiff-Hladir salt route, 34g.
Made peace with Japanese (after they killed two of my archers with elephants),
I'll get back at them but I don't have units ready yet.
 720 - Viking's build Great Library.
       Discover Bridge Building, research Gunpowder.
 760 - Cardiff-Liverpool copper route, 32g.
 780 - York builds Leonardo's Workshop.
 820 - Dover-Nottingham beads route, 14g.
       York-Coventry wine route, 30-something gold.
Switched some caravans to catapults. Activated one defender in cities that have
three; will start on offensive soon.
840 - Gunpowder! Leo's upgrades lesser units to musketeers.
Start researching Feudalism. Tough decision between it and Seafaring. Want Sun's
         for vet units.
Brighton-Newcastle salt route. No demand (anywhere) 8g.
880 - Vikings offer peace treaty, I accept & ask tribute, they declare war.
Damn! I just realized that I forgot to build roads on river squares after getting
Bridge Building. I've done this before, and it ticks me off.
920 - American civilization destroyed by Vikings.
 960 - Nottingham-Liverpool wool route, 17?g (not demanded).
[Note: I'm not rush-buying anything now, unless it prevents shield waste. Saving money
for city bribery. The NON units are great, but they do keep depleting the gold.]
980 - Discover Feudalism, research seafaring. Tried to trade for seafaring but everyone
         wants gunpowder of course.
Found Norwich (on north island near Liverpool).
       Japanese build Marco's.
1060 - Continue fighting Vikings. They have catapults so I probably need a fort.
Took a chance sending trireme into dark sea; didn't sink.
1100 - Seafaring, researching University.
1140 - Capture Viking city of Hladir. Turns out it was defended by only an archer and
a legion (after it I killed two catapults that came out). Wouldn't have needed
a fort after all, so I wasted some time. Got 48g and Republic. Not going to
change governments while at war, at least not without JS Bach's.
Vikings offer peace but I refused. Diplo found Viking city of Uppsala, which is
in disorder. Bribe costs 252g, I have 194. Sell Coventry marketplace to get
enough, then bribe Uppsala. I seldom sell improvements but this seemed worth it.
1160 - I was positioning a diplo and musketeer to keep an eye on the Japanese, and it's
a good thing I did. They revealed a Japanese diplo on his was toward Oxford.
Trying to steal Gunpowder, most likely.
Polar hut - barb horsemen. Diplo got back on boat.
1180 - Disorder in Dover and Coventry; used entertainers.
Treasury down to 17g. I want caravans for Sun Tzu's, and luxury only 10%.
I think if I ask for tribute the Aztec's won't have much money (only two cities
from what I see) and the Japanese will declare war. Not much choice but to
         be frugal.
1220 - Captured Viking city of Kaupang. Only seems to have had one defender. Vikings
must be really low on units. Either that or Tronheim is going to be loaded.
1240 - University, research Metallurgy (to convert catapults to cannon, of course).
       Dover-York gems route, 48g.
1260 - Vikings are in bad shape. I left a musketeer just outside Tronheim and they
didn't even attack it during their move. So now all catapults are in position
         for next turn.
Diplo discovered Rome (finally). Made peace and I demanded tribute - 400g!
That surprised me; I thought they might declare war.
1280 - Captured Tronheim. It had city walls and was defended by I think 2 phalanx
and 1 warrior. I lost 2 catapults. Even lost one to a warrior.
1300 - Bribed Viking settler for 212g (NON).
Japanese captured Roman city of Neopolis.
1320 - Captured Viking city of Boston with just catapult & crusader. Lost catapult.
1360 - London completes Sun Tzu's War Academy.
Diplo bribes Japanese city of Neopolis.
Risked Bristol trireme on open sea; it sank. I've got to get caravels.
1380 - Japanese offer cease-fire. I accept, because Neopolis only has one weak
defender and my cannons aren't in position yet.
1400 - Disorder problem. Wish I had JS Bach's. Don't want to increase luxury
because I need the money. ALready had to lower science because taxes
were less than cost. Too many entertainers though, and discover rate
         too slow.
1420 - Attackers outside New York barely survived. I didn't realize they had a
catapult in there. Captured New York from Vikings. Think they have one
         city left. Got Pyramids.
Vikings offered cease-fire. I didn't mean to accept but hit the wrong key.
         Won't last long.
1500 - Not much happening; just positioning to attack Japanese and finish off Vikings.
       Nottingham-York spice route, 54g.
1550 - Forgot about the log for a few turns. Captured Japanese cities of Edo
and Osaka. Defenders were archers and warriors; I expected Japanese
to be more advanced. Got Medicine? and about 120g. Also captured
last Viking city of Philadelphia; Viking civ destroyed.
1560 - Built JS Bach's in London. Wasn't going to but I had enough caravans
stockpiled and I got tired of dealing with disorder. I'm surprised to
still see some unhappies; I even need entertainers in a couple cities.
Barbs landed between York and Canterbury, killed 1 population in York.
Japanese elephant killed two of my settlers near Satsuma. Came from a
an area I didn't realize has a city.
1580 - Captured Kyoto. Got Marco Polo's.
Bribed Aztec city of Tlaxcala (lucky to catch it in disorder).
1590 - Bribed Japanese city of Kagoshima, Japanese civilization destroyed.
Marco's shows Romans and Aztecs both have two cities each. Now it's
just a matter of moving my armies into position. Going to split up
         and go after both.
1600 - Cardiff-London gold route, 60g?
Lost a trireme at sea. Never use the Goto command with triremes,
even if by rights it should hug the shore. I shouldn't still have
triremes at this point, way too late for that.
Delivered food caravan from Nottingham to York, to build population
faster. Then realized that York can't grow any more without Sanitation.
1640 - Cardiff-York dye route, 60g.
       Cardiff-Hladir wine route, 30g.
1660 - Bribed Roman city of Pompeii, 137g.
1670 - Gems and silk caravans to Liverpool, 87g & 33g.
1680 - Democracy, reseach Explosives.
       Oxford-Hladir dye route, 18g?
       Conquered Aztec city of Texcoco.
1690 - Bribed Aztec city of Tlatelolco. (I hate spelling these Aztec cities.)
1700 - Conquered Rome, last AI city.
       Score 1398, Rating 181%.
